Few people know that the original recipe for Krispy Kreme Donuts was purchased from a French Pastry Chef in New Orleans! But for over 150 years before that, early risers in Le Vieux Carre, the French Quarter, started their mornings with a strong cup of dark roast chicory coffee and a plate of hot beignets, New Orleans' own version of fried dough, generously sprinkled with powdered sugar. Such venerable institutions as Morning Call and Café du Monde are still serving these marvelous treats after many, many decades of service.

Every Saturday morning at 10:00, Chef Rameaux's re-creates this fine culinary tradition, and teaches you how to make Café au Lait and Beignets for yourself. No reservations are necessary, but a call would be a good idea. It's only $7 per person for all you care to have, and kids shorter than the counter eat free! Bring your paper and start your Saturday with the Chef.

An old, traditional French rhyme perhaps best describes how New Orleaneans like their coffee:

Original French:

Noir comme le Diable;

Fort comme la Mort;

Doux comme l'Amour;

Et chaud comme l'Enfer.

English Translation:

Black as the Devil;

Strong as Death;

Sweet as Love;

And hot as Hell.

Rose Nicaud, a gens de couleur libre, or "free person of color," is reputed to be the first coffee vendor in New Orleans.
