Hi Friends:
On behalf of myself, Peggy, and Austin, let me first thank all of you for the many calls, cards, well-wishes,food, and prayers that were sent our way during my surgery and hospitalization. I wanted to update everybody on how things are going.
First, I was in the hospital for six weeks, not the original two they had estimated, and four of that were in Intensive Care. The cancer that started around my right eye had spread well into my upper jaw and all the way to the back of my scalp. They had to remove my eye and most of the bone surrounding it, as well as parts of my cranium in order to get rid of all the cancer, but they believe they got it all. This extremely invasive procedure--actually three different procedures-left me in pretty poor shape. I suffered severe hallucinations for about three weeks, and the surgery left me extremely weak and debilitated.
I spent several days in a rehab center after being released from the hospital, but I've been back at home now for about three weeks and I'm doing a little better every day. I'm still facing several more plastic surgery procedures to repair and reconstruct my face and scalp. Right now I have a very large skin graft that was taken from my leg that covers most of the right side of my face. The plastic surgeons at Duke will be making adjustments to that starting next week to make me look a little more presentable. Because of the massive removal of tissue and bone around my right eye, I will not be a candidate for a glass eye, but I will probably have some sort of rakish eye patch there anyway. Don't y'all think I should also get a nifty gold ear ring to finish the look?
I hope to be back in the store on a limited basis by early May. I've already started booking private parties and team building events in June, so, as I promised, I will be back. As the Simon & Garfunkle song says, the fighter carries the reminders of every every blow that cut him or bled him till he cried out in his anger and his shame . . . but the fighter still remains. The love and support of our family, friends, neighbors, and customers has sustained us, and we'll be back just as soon as possible. Thanks again, and stay tuned right here for further updates.
